Respect Is Earned


The Laureus Sport for Good Awards celebrates the achievements of the most remarkable men and women in the field of sport and took we take a look at the nominations for the sporting moment of the year award. The award is voted for by the public and displays of fair play, sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. They symbolize that power that sport has to change the world. The nominations are:

Billy Monger


10 months after Billy Monger, 18, suffered a crashed which led to amputation of both his legs, he is back racing in British F3 for Carlin Motorsport. Despite losing both his legs, the young driver’s positive attitude has brought him the love and support of the motorsport community. He was recently first in the pre-season tests despite his disability and is proving an inspiration for the rest of the world.

Bradley Lowery


Bradley Lowery, 6, passed away from Neuroblastoma, a rare form cancer, but moved people all around the world with his passion for the game of football and his favorite club, Sunderland. Well wishers raised more than $700,000 for his treatment in New York but his family was informed that his cancer had spread and was terminal giving him just months to live. His relationship with Jermain Defoe warmed the hearts of fans all across the world and lived his dream of appearing as a mascot for the England National Team all the while raising awareness about Neuroblastoma around the world.

Chapecoense


Chapecoense suffered a tragedy when their plane crashed on the way to a match in Medellin in Colombia. Only three of the players survived and led to an outpour of support from the footballing community and across the world. Brazilian clubs offered to loan them players and presented a case to the Brazilian FA that Chapecoense be exempt from relegation for a period of three years. The team was invited to Camp Nou by Barcelona to play a friendly and despite their setbacks, they refused to be exempted from relegation and managed to finish 8th in the league proving to be an inspiration for the rest of the world.

Wave to the Kids (Iowa Hawkeyes)


The Iowa Hawkeyes have a new tradition where they wave to the kids in the children’s hospital overlooking their stadium. All the players, coaches and fans take out a minute and wave to the kids watching the match from their hospital beds. The message that they want to send across is one of support and love as they acknowledge the fact that while they are having fun watching a football match, there are children in the hospital fighting for their lives.

Kimi Raikkonen and Scuderia Ferrari


Thomas Danel, 6, was heartbroken when his hero Kimi Raikkonen was crashed into by Max Verstappen at Turn 1 of the Spanish Grand Prix. His crying face gained sympathy from the crowd present at the Grand Prix and quickly did the rounds on social media. The six year old was then tracked down by Ferrari who invited him down to the pits where he got a chance to meet his hero Raikkonen who presented him with a signed cap turning a day of despair into one of happiness for young Thomas and leaving him with a memory he would cherish forever.
